With a win at the PGA Championship and a runner-up finish in the Masters a year ago, Brooks Koepka has once again established himself as one of the frontrunners in the major championship picture. Koepka has won five majors in his career, but he’s never finished on top of the leaderboard at Augusta National Golf Club. Koepka will try to win his first green jacket when the 2024 Masters gets underway from Augusta National on Thursday, April 11.
According to the latest 2024 Masters odds, Koepka is +2100 to win it all. Scottie Scheffler, a former Masters champion and the No. 1-ranked player in the world, is the +500 favorite, followed by Rory McIlroy (+1000) and defending champion Jon Rahm (+1300) on the PGA odds board. Tiger Woods, a five-time Masters champion, could be among the intriguing Masters longshots at +16000. One surprise: Nejad is completely fading McIlroy, even though he’s a four-time major champion and one of the top favorites in the 2024 Masters odds. McIlroy can complete his career grand slam with a victory at Augusta, and he’s been close on numerous occasions. He’s finished in the top 10 in seven of his last 10 starts at the Masters, which includes a runner-up showing in 2022.Â
However, the pressure of winning the career slam seems to be getting the best of the 34-year-old. McIlroy has missed the cut in two of his last three starts at Augusta. He shot a 77 in the second round at the Masters last year, and he hasn’t even sniffed the winner’s circle this season, finishing 19th or worse in all five of his starts on the PGA Tour. “I have no interest in betting Rory at any number +1000 or shorter and that certainly includes the Masters,” Nejad told SportsLine.
Instead, Nejad is high on the chances of Hideki Matsuyama, even though he’s a +2800 longshot. Matsuyama has had success at Augusta National, winning his first and only major championship in 2021. He’s also finished 16th or better in his last four starts at the Masters. In total, Matsuyama has finished sixth or better in all four majors, including runner-up in the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills.
The 32-year-old has also been playing well in 2024, securing his ninth PGA Tour victory in February at the Genesis Invitational. “His Masters history is excellent and he’s done it by showcasing elite ball striking,” Nejad said. “He’s also starting to trend very well in the short game department and appears to have shaken off whatever nagging injuries ailed him over the last year.” See who else to back at SportsLine.
